Overview

ReFocus AI is looking for a Lead Machine Learning Engineer to join our fast-paced team and help drive ReFocus adoption in North America.

In this position, you will have the opportunity to be part of a sales enablement AI platform for our customers in the insurance and sales enablement industries.

You will work closely with your colleagues to build and deploy advanced machine-learning mod...els for sales teams of all sizes, from independent insurance agencies to multinational insurance entities.

We are seeking a hands-on Lead AI Engineer to architect, build, and scale modern AI systems powered by LLMs, agentic workflows, and real-world data pipelines.

This role goes beyond traditional machine learning—you will define how AI is embedded into core product experiences and drive execution from prototype to production.

You will work closely with leadership to shape our AI strategy and deliver high-impact, customer-facing capabilities.

Responsibilities

● Design and implement LLM-powered workflows for use cases such as retention insights, communication generation, policy analysis, and quote comparison

● Architect and build agentic systems to automate multi-step workflows, including data extraction, enrichment, and carrier quoting

● Develop and optimize retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) pipelines, including embedding strategies, chunking, and reranking

● Own the end-to-end AI system lifecycle, from prototyping to production deployment and iteration

● Build and maintain LLMOps infrastructure, including prompt/version management, observability, evaluation, and monitoring

● Implement evaluation frameworks (offline and online) to measure accuracy, reliability, and business impact

● Design scalable data pipelines and integrations across AMS platforms, carrier systems, and external data sources

● Optimize AI systems for latency, cost, and reliability, including multi-model routing strategies

● Collaborate closely with product, engineering, and business teams to align AI capabilities with customer needs

● Mentor engineers and provide technical leadership across AI and backend systems

● Stay current with advancements in LLMs, agent frameworks, and applied AI systems

Required Qualifications

● 7–10+ years of experience in software engineering, machine learning, or AI

● 2+ years of hands-on experience working with LLMs / Generative AI in production environments

● Proven track record of building and deploying end-to-end AI systems, not just models

● Strong experience with modern LLM platforms (e.g., OpenAI, Claude, or open-source models)

● Deep understanding of:

○ Prompt engineering and structured outputs

○ Function calling / tool usage

○ Model tradeoffs (latency, cost, quality)

● Hands-on experience with RAG systems, including vector databases and retrieval optimization

● Experience building or working with agent frameworks and orchestration patterns

● Strong backend engineering skills (APIs, distributed systems, async workflows)

● Proficiency in Python (required)

● Experience with cloud platforms, preferably AWS

● Experience with LLM observability, evaluation, and debugging

● Strong fundamentals in system design, data structures, and scalable architecture

● Experience operating in an AI-augmented development workflow, leveraging tools such as Cursor, GitHub Copilot, or similar to accelerate development, debugging, and iteration speed

● Strong ability to leverage LLMs throughout the software development lifecycle, including code generation, refactoring, debugging, and rapid prototyping

Preferred Qualifications

● Experience building AI copilots or workflow automation agents

● Experience with browser automation or computer-use agents

● Familiarity with frameworks such as LangChain, LlamaIndex, or similar tools

● Experience with multi-model routing and optimization strategies

● Familiarity with Node.js / TypeScript ecosystems (e.g., Next.js, NestJS)

● Experience working on customer-facing AI products in production

● Domain experience in insurance, fintech, or structured data systems

● Demonstrated ability to mentor engineers and lead technical initiatives

Education

● Possess a BS or MS in Computer Science, Machine Learning, or a related field.
