Responsibilities

Reporting to the Director of Legal Analytics, the AI Research Intern will conduct research and analysis to support and develop the ACLU's approach to generative AI

You will work in close partnership with technologists, attorneys, policy advocates, and members of the ACLU's generative AI working group

Conducting sociotechnical analyses of generative AI systems in line with ACLU values and potential use cases may include:

Conducting a landscape analysis of current generative AI offerings and possible implementations

Adapting cutting-edge research on bias testing of large language models to develop a model-agnostic testing and evaluation toolkit

Participate in the ACLU's Generative AI Reading Group alongside technologists, attorneys, and policy experts

Assist with drafting, production, and distribution of public-facing materials about generative AI

Leading or participating in other data science projects with members of the legal analytics team

Be committed to advancing the mission of the ACLU

Center and embed the principles of equity, inclusion, and belonging in their work

Be committed to work collaboratively and respectfully toward resolving obstacles and conflict

Time Commitment: Term-time internships may be completed on a part-time basis (10, 15, or 20 hours/week) or full-time (35 hours/week)
Full Description
The ACLU seeks a Graduate or Undergraduate AI Research Intern in the Analytics Division of the Technology Department.
This position can be remote or hybrid.
The Team:
The Technology Department provides trusted, dependable, and impactful analytics, engineering and product design and management expertise for the ACLU.
ACLU Analytics partners with teams across the organization to enable smart, evidence-based decisions and bring quantitative insights on issues to the courtroom and public.
What You'll Do:

You will work in close partnership with technologists, attorneys, policy advocates, and members of the ACLU's generative AI working group.

What You'll Bring:
• A strong interest in algorithmic justice, demonstrated by past work, research, volunteer organizing, or other projects

• Strong organizational skills and the ability to work independently as well as in a team
• Proficiency in a programming language for statistical analysis, such as R or Python, is preferred but not required
