• Geospatial Annotation Tool - We built a browser-based annotation platform that lets users create training datasets across multiple imagery types and time steps. It's used by conservation scientists and NGOs to label everything from croplands to mangroves, replacing what was once a fragmented or prohibitively expensive process.

• Model Fine-Tuning Platform - The OlmoEarth Platform allows users with no ML background to fine-tune our foundation models to their specific domain - whether that's wildfire fuel mapping, crop classification, or flood detection. Engineers collaborated closely with researchers to design the orchestration, configuration, and compute management layers that make "walk-up" fine-tuning possible, achieving state-of-the-art performance with minimal friction. • AIS Data Pipeline & Track Generation - Our largest data source is a real-time feed of global AIS data, about 1k messages per second that we use to compute vessel trajectories in real-time using Kafka Streams. This data stream is great, but very messy. Our algorithms have to sift through the noise very quickly to find the signal. Our Machine Learning models take these computed trajectories as input to predict vessel behaviors.

As an intern, we don't expect you to come in knowing our tech stack. We care way more about your ability to learn and engage. But since we know you'll ask, here is our current tech stack:

• React/Typescript web-apps.

Description of the placement:

We are looking for a student interested in infectious disease epidemiology and machine learning methods who is seeking an opportunity to develop their epidemiologic and analytic skills. This project will focus on advancing machine learning methods for short-term (“nowcasting”) surveillance of SARS-CoV-2, influenza, and RSV activity in Ontario. The student will contribute to the development and evaluation of a range of algorithms—e.g., Random Forest, Extreme Gradient Boosting (XGBoost)—using time series cross-validation to assess predictive performance. The project will also explore ensemble forecasting strategies that intelligently combine outputs from multiple models to balance sensitivity and stability. By improving the precision and reliability of respiratory virus forecasts, this initiative will enhance public health situational awareness and support timely, evidence-informed decisions in outbreak response, resource allocation, and health system planning.

Working with Scientists and staff from the Communicable Disease Control, Communicable Diseases, and Data Science and Analytics teams, the student will have the opportunity to develop analytic plans and undertake statistical analyses. The student may also contribute to the preparation of a report or manuscript.

This practicum is an ideal fit for a student with strong statistical analysis skills who wishes to gain experience in infectious disease epidemiology. The student will work as part of a multidisciplinary research team to conduct the work and will have the opportunity to learn more about the datasets available at PHO and how they can be used to contribute to public health research.

Suggested placement start date: May to August 2026

Title: AI / ML Engineer Financial Services

Location: Auburn Hills, MI, Farmington Hills, MI or Frisco, TX

Role Summary

Design, develop, and deploy production-grade machine learning models supporting risk management, fraud detection, customer analytics, and operational efficiency within a regulated financial services environment.

Key Responsibilities

• Build, test, and deploy ML models using Python and modern ML frameworks

• Partner with Data Engineering teams to consume governed data pipelines

• Implement model monitoring, performance tracking, and drift detection

• Collaborate with Model Risk and Compliance teams to ensure explainability and fairness

• Support re-training and optimization of models as business and regulatory requirements evolve

Required Qualifications

• 5+ years experience in applied machine learning or data science

• Strong Python, SQL, and ML frameworks (TensorFlow, PyTorch, XGBoost)

• Experience deploying models into production environments

• Familiarity with explainability techniques (e.g., SHAP, LIME)

• Financial services

Nice to Have

• Azure ML, AWS SageMaker, or Google Cloud Platform Vertex

• Fraud, credit, AML, or customer analytics experience
