Role Overview

Mercor is seeking bilingual English–Japanese language experts to collaborate on a high-impact AI language evaluation project with a leading research partner.

Freelancers will help assess the quality and naturalness of translations, with a focus on fluency, local phrasing, and cultural relevance in Japanese.

This is a unique opportunity to apply linguistic expertise to improve cutting-edge language technologies.

The engagement is part-time and short-term, with flexible hours.

Key Responsibilities

• Review English-to-Japanese translations for fluency, accuracy, and local relevance

• Flag unnatural phrasing and suggest culturally appropriate alternatives

• Assess AI-generated outputs for quality, tone, and context alignment

• Provide written feedback on nuanced linguistic errors or ambiguities

• Maintain consistency and attention to detail across multiple review tasks

Ideal Qualifications

• Native-level fluency in Japanese and fluent English proficiency

• Strong reading speed and comprehension in both languages

• Demonstrated experience with translation review or linguistic QA

• High attention to detail and cultural sensitivity

• Ability to work independently and meet deadlines on a flexible schedule

• Remote and asynchronous — set your own hours

● Expected commitment: 10+ hours/week

● Project duration: 1+ months

• All work is task-based and compensated per hour

Compensation & Contract Terms

• $40–45/hour USD, depending on experience

● Paid weekly via Stripe Connect

• You’ll be classified as an independent contractor
