Hardware Developer – IoT Systems

SYMX.AI

Calgary, AB

Full-time

Full Description

About the Role

We are looking for an experienced and innovative Hardware Developer to join our growing IoT hardware team. You will play a key role in designing and developing rugged, field-ready IoT devices used in heavy-duty industrial environments (e.g., mining, construction, forestry).

This role is highly hands-on and ideal for someone who thrives in an agile, fast-paced product development setting.

You will be responsible for taking hardware designs from concept to production, including schematic design, PCB layout, and testing.

Strong CAD skills (especially in Altium Designer) are essential, as is field deployment experience to validate designs under real-world conditions.

Key Responsibilities

• Own end-to-end hardware development: concept, schematic capture, PCB layout, validation, and documentation.

• Develop multi-layer PCBs using Altium Designer and other CAD tools.

• Design for manufacturability (DFM), electromagnetic compatibility (EMC), and rugged field deployment.

• Lead or contribute to device bring-up, functional testing, and hardware validation (bench and field).

• Collaborate with firmware and mechanical engineering teams to integrate subsystems (e.g., sensors, radios, power supply).

• Create and review test plans for electrical verification and long-term reliability.

• Troubleshoot field issues and implement design improvements.

• Support harness design, soldering, and custom fixture assembly for prototyping and test rigs.

• Lead installation efforts and provide field support for pilot deployments.

Minimum Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering or a related discipline.

• 5+ years of experience in hardware design, testing, and validation.

• Expert-level experience in Altium Designer for schematic capture and multi-layer PCB layout.

• Strong hands-on skills: soldering, harness manufacturing, lab instrumentation use.

• Experience designing hardware for embedded Linux platforms, microcontrollers, and IoT systems.

• Knowledge of wireless technologies (WiFi, Bluetooth, LTE, GNSS, TPMS, etc.).

• Familiarity with power electronics, battery management, and protection circuitry.

• Working knowledge of IoT firmware architectures and hardware/firmware co-design principles.

• Proficiency in Python for test automation and root cause analysis.

• Willingness to travel to customer sites for installation and field testing.

• Experience in fleet coordination and field deployments.

Preferred Qualifications:

• Experience with ruggedized / automotive-grade designs (IP65+, 12–24V power, EMI/EMC compliance).

• Knowledge of design for certification (FCC, CE, IC, RED, etc.).

• Familiarity with CAN bus, RS232/485, ADCs, digital IO, and sensor integration.

• Exposure to satellite or mesh communication modules (e.g., WiFi HaLow, Swarm, LoRa, Zigbee).

• Experience with Jira, Confluence, and version control (Git).

What We Offer

• Opportunity to lead hardware design efforts on next-generation industrial IoT products.

• A fast-paced, cross-functional environment that values initiative and innovation.

• On-site and in-field engineering challenges that offer direct product impact.

• Competitive salary and benefits.

• Growth potential into systems design leadership or technical product ownership.
